Roosterfish from the Beach

The East Cape Region is without a doubt the best place on the planet to target roosterfish from shore with the fly rod. I'm based at the East Cape which allows me to fish and scout the beaches year round. You can book with confidence knowing that you'll be fishing with an expert in the art of sight casting to trophy class roosterfish. My original fly pattern, the Mona Lisa, has accounted for 3 IGFA world record roosterfish…all caught from shore. If sight casting to roosterfish is on your bucket list, you're in good hands with LPF. While the majority of my East Cape guests are fly anglers, light tackle enthusiasts are always welcome.

A wide variety of species are available to the shore bound angler at East Cape. Jacks, ladyfish, snapper, pompano and even pelagic species like dorado and skipjack can be taken from shore. But it's the roosterfish that rules the beach and draws anglers from around the globe seeking their shot at a grande pez gallo.

Unlike the Pacific coast where ocean swells crash the shore, the beaches of the Gulf coast are much calmer. Sometimes lake like. Coupled with clear water and bright sun, it's a recipe for amazing sight fishing on some of the world's most beautiful beaches.

The high percentage time to hunt roosterfish from the beach is spring and early summer. However, roosterfish can be caught from shore each month of the year. That said, conditions and concentrations of bait and gamefish vary a great deal through the seasons, so having a guide with a finger on the pulse of the beach fishing is critical. With over 13 years of hard core beach fishing experience...I know what takes to put you on fish and raise combs.

Roosterfish are renowned as one of the world's top gamefish. A reputation that's well earned by their striking appearance, strength, stamina, and the sheer challenge involved in capturing them on the fly. Strong casting ability, good line management, sharp eyes and sheer determination are requirements to be successful with these fish. There is no greater test of your sight fishing skills than casting to cruising roosters from the beach.

This is challenging, often physical fly fishing and the learning curve can be steep. However, bringing a roosterfish to hand on the beach is a reward worth the effort. It's one of fly fishing's most unique experiences.

Outside of the peak roosterfish months, quality surf fishing is still available. Fall and winter can offer shots at roosterfish, jacks, ladyfish, black skipjack and sierra mackerel .
